Playfair Display Font is a serif font. It is named after the author of the first typeface to be cut for printing, John Playfair. The typeface was commissioned in 1858 by the London publisher Henry Vizetelly and cut by Taylor and Gardner’s Punch house.

The typeface bears some resemblance to transitional serifs such as Baskerville but has flat tops to the A, M, and N rather than round ones. The overall effect is of a sturdy, no-nonsense design, which was perhaps its main attraction to Vizetelly.

This Font’s use became quite popular in the early days of printing and it was used for some notable works, such as the first edition of The Times. However, by the end of the 19th century, its popularity had waned and it was no longer used for a new printing. The typeface was revived in the mid-20th century by the Monotype Corporation, which released a digital version in 1995.
